Cross stitch is an ancient form of art that has been in existence since time immemorial. It involves working through a fabric or canvas by hand, stitch by stitch, until the whole piece is realized.

My interaction with the cross stitch has been an interesting one, but as one who is prone to be interrogative with my subjects of interaction, I have come to a point where I would like to explore how best to relate with it in a Kenyan context.

What images, patterns, motifs and ideas would be embedded in a piece within the Kenyan context?

What would it embrace from the Kenyan people?

Which materials, threads and colors would it take up?

How long does it take to conceptualize and create a piece to completion?

What would the piece contribute to the quality of the space in which it is placed?

I invite you to join me as I embark on this fascinating journey to attempt to answer the above questions and more, and hopefully find a meaningful reinterpretation of this ancient form of art in Kenya, and eventually in Africa, and the contribution it would make to the world of hand made art.
